Battery shelter renewal on an exposed site

Two ageing battery shelters replaced with SafeBox AVAC units, giving full frontal access for battery changes and a retention tray to environmental rules.

The brief

The site carried batteries and associated equipment in shelters that had stopped being serviceable. Battery changes meant working around the structure, the doors could no longer be secured, and the client wanted to avoid new civil engineering on a constrained plot.

What we did

We replaced both shelters with SafeBox AVAC units sized to the existing bases, so the concrete was reused rather than rebuilt. Each unit was set down and secured in about two hours without stopping traffic.

  • Assessment of the existing slabs, reused with a small enlargement plan.
  • Two AVAC units prefabricated: welded steel, hot-dip galvanised, C5M.
  • Retention trays fitted in line with environmental rules.
  • Batteries transferred and the units secured on four-point locking.

The result

Battery replacement no longer requires removing the structure. The site is secured against forced entry, the retention trays satisfy the environmental requirement, and no new civil works were needed.
